About Goethe gegen Schiller
The two names that share a plinth on the Theaterplatz are set against each other for one evening, and the audience is invited to take a side. The house stages it as a contest — Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the universal genius from Frankfurt, against Friedrich Schiller from Marbach — fought with the ballads, with musical rounds between them and cheering encouraged. It is a good joke on a town that has spent two centuries insisting the two men were a friendship rather than a rivalry, and it is also the most efficient way anyone has found to get an audience to listen to ballads.
