The subtitle is the whole argument — an approach. Two actors take the text on with curiosity and respect rather than reverence, and the direction lets humour and invention do the work that solemnity usually does with this play. What comes out is the oldest human conflict in the repertoire, put next to the ones the audience walked in with. Elisabeth Möckel and Martin Bertram play it, Regine Heintze directs, and the vaults do the rest: at this distance Faust is a conversation, not a monument. In Weimar, where the play is also a tourist product, that is the useful version.

For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
