29–31 October 2026
An international festival on history, democracy and migration, held in the city whose name became shorthand for a republic that failed.
The republic that took its constitution and its label from this town lasted fourteen years, and "Weimar" has been used ever since as a warning about what happens when a democracy stops working. That is a heavy inheritance for a place of this size, and the rest of the year the town mostly changes the subject to Goethe.
Three days at the end of October of panels, lectures, guided walks, film and music — and a pub quiz, which tells you the register being aimed at. The format is public argument rather than conference paper: the point is that the past should be made discussable, not delivered.
This is the town below the Ettersberg, with Buchenwald on the hill above it. A festival about how democracies fail, staged directly beneath the ground where the consequences were built, is not a neutral piece of programming — and it is the most necessary weekend in the Weimar calendar for exactly that reason.
