One melody, one rhythm, no development, and an orchestra that simply keeps getting louder for a quarter of an hour. Ravel called it an experiment in orchestration with no music in it, and was mildly appalled to find it the most popular thing he ever wrote. It closes an evening that begins with Sibelius's Oceanides, Grieg's piano concerto and Debussy's La Mer.
