David Bowie – We can be Heroes!

Bowie made characters as much as he made records — a cast he put on and took off again, and with them a standing repertoire of outsiders, border-crossers and star people that has outlived several decades of pop. The evening takes that cast seriously enough to give it the main stage. It reaches too for the Berlin concert of 1987, played in the open beside the Reichstag, where people gathered on the eastern side of the Wall to listen in. Since his death, the house reckons, the work has come to read like a forecast. Johannes Bettac has the musical direction, Jette Büshel directs.
