About Don Karlos
Schiller's tragedy of a prince, his father's wife, and a friend who dies for an idea — the play that gave German the demand to grant men freedom of thought. He wrote it in the years just before Weimar claimed him, and the company staging it now is the one he and Goethe turned into a German institution — the building itself came later, opening in 1908.

For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
