About Ein deutsches Requiem

Brahms chose his own texts from Luther's Bible and left out everything a requiem is supposed to contain — the day of wrath, the plea for the dead, the name of the redeemer. What remains is addressed to the people still here: Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. His Tragic Overture opens the evening, with Bruch's Kol Nidrei for cello between the two.
