About Emilia Galotti
Lessing moved a Roman story into an Italian court in 1772 and made of it a bürgerliches Trauerspiel — a middle-class tragedy with a political edge: a prince wants a bourgeois woman, the machinery of the court removes every obstacle in his way, and her father settles it with a dagger. The horror is that within the play's logic he is not wrong. The DNT programmes it for the city's 2027 themed year on women in Weimar.
