About Faust. Der Tragödie erster Teil

Goethe worked at Faust across sixty years; the first part appeared in 1808, when he had already spent three decades in Weimar. Seeing it here means seeing it in the city where much of it was written, played by the company whose stage he himself directed — though the building on the square is a later one, opened in 1908. The bargain, the poodle, Gretchen — and the question the whole thing turns on: whether striving alone is enough to redeem a man.

Historical periods

Goethe worked at it across the decades this period covers, and it is the work most readers picture when they think of it.

For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
