About Faust. Der Tragödie zweiter Teil

Goethe sealed the second part away to be opened after he died, and it breaks every rule the first one kept. Helen of Troy, the invention of paper money, a coastline reclaimed from the sea, and a closing scene argued over since 1832. It is staged far less often than Faust I and is harder to love, which is precisely why a theatre in Goethe's own city takes it on — and this is the city that first attempted it, in an incomplete staging here in 1876.

Historical periods

The period's closing statement, finished in its last years and sealed until Goethe was dead.

For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
