The evening puts two kinds of lightness side by side: Italian opera, which keeps its grand manner even when the subject is nothing but feeling, and Viennese operetta, which calls the feeling a pleasure and gets straight on with it. Verdi, Bellini, Puccini and Mascagni before the interval; operetta after it, from Die Fledermaus to Die lustige Witwe. Marco Alibrando conducts the Staatskapelle and the DNT's opera chorus, with Sarah Ferede and Irakli Kakhidze — twice over, to see the year out and then to open the next one.
