Cäcilie comes to the Baroness Stella to find a position for her daughter, and though the two women barely know each other they confide in one another: both were left by the man they loved. When Fernando arrives to see Stella again, Cäcilie understands that he is her daughter's father and the same man. Goethe's first ending had the three of them live together, and the idea was a scandal at the Hamburg premiere; thirty years later he made a Weimar version with a tragic close, and that one the audience applauded. Patricija Katica Bronić stages it as a question about how we hold community and feeling now.

For roughly sixty years a duchy of a few thousand people held the centre of German literature, because its ruler kept inviting writers to live there and then gave them jobs. That is the whole mechanism, and it ran from Goethe's arrival in 1775 to his death in 1832.
