About Wir sind das Volk

Luise Voigt and Eva Bormann interviewed fifty people from Weimar and Thuringia — politicians, students, Ukrainian refugees, care workers, activists, artists, the oldest born in 1929 and the youngest in 2008 — and arranged what they said into an evening. The title is a sentence that has been shouted in German streets for more than thirty-five years and claimed by very different people in that time, which is exactly the question the piece puts: who is "we" today? The material is this city's own, and the people on stage are speaking its residents' words.

Historical periods

The evening follows what the sentence has meant across the thirty-five-plus years the house counts, and who lays claim to it now.

Since 1990 Weimar has been a small city with an outsized inheritance, working out what to do with it — and occasionally being handed a role in European politics on the strength of its name.
