About Bauhaus und Politik
An exhibition on the political dimension of the Bauhaus across its whole life, from 1919 to 1933 — the argument that a school remembered for chairs was also a testing ground for how a society might be organised.
A school is a political proposition
The Bauhaus is usually sold as form: the lamp, the chair, the typeface. This exhibition takes the other half seriously — that a school teaching people how to make everything from a teapot to a housing block is making a claim about how life should be arranged, and that its members knew it. Between 1919 and 1933 that claim had to survive three cities and a collapsing republic.
The question it ends on
The freedom of art and of scholarship is what the whole story turns on, and the exhibition says plainly that the question has not gone away. Staged in the town where the school was founded and out of which it was pushed, that is a less comfortable point than it would be anywhere else — which is the reason to see it here rather than read about it.
Where and how long
It is at the Museum Neues Weimar and runs long, into the new year — so it can be planned around rather than caught. No separate ticket; museum entry covers it.
