About Jüdisches Leben in Weimar
Weimar's Jewish history runs to roughly seven centuries, and for most of that time it was not a footnote to the classical city but a part of it. This walk covers the whole arc: medieval settlement, expulsion and return, the nineteenth-century community that built and prospered here, and then the years in which a town that traded on Goethe and Schiller sat at the foot of the hill Buchenwald was built on. The route stays in the old town and on ground that is easy to walk, which is its own kind of argument — most of what it points at is not a memorial but an ordinary address. Two hours, on a handful of announced dates rather than a weekly clock.
