Jüdisches Leben in Weimar
23 September 2026 · 10:30 Uhr
Two hours, on announced dates
Seven hundred years of Jewish Weimar, walked in two hours — the flourishing as well as the destruction.
Out with the Weimar night watchman
Ninety minutes through the old town after dark, on the round a night watchman would once have walked.
Now on, until 1 November 2026
21 March – 1 November 2026 · freitags und samstags ab 20:30 Uhr
Ninety minutes through the old town after dark, following the shape of a round a night watchman would once have walked.
From the Neptune fountain on the market square the walk goes to the Frauenplan and Goethe's front door, down the Seifengasse past the house where Charlotte von Stein lived, on to the Anna Amalia Library, into the Park an der Ilm, up to the city palace and back to the Herderplatz. Every one of those is a stop on some daytime tour; the sequence is what makes this one different.
At half past eight in the evening these places are mostly empty, and the distances between them — which is to say how small the classical world actually was — become obvious in a way no map conveys. Goethe's door on the Frauenplan and Charlotte von Stein's in the Seifengasse are on the same short stretch of the route. You feel the scale of the thing by walking it, not by reading about it.
Only in the lighter half of the year, and not on the Onion Market weekend, when the streets belong to something a great deal louder. If you are in Weimar in winter this is one of the things you have to come back for.
