Kunstfest Weimar
27 August – 12 September 2027
Late August into early September
Central Germany's largest festival of contemporary arts, closing the city's summer at the turn from August into September.
Weimar celebrates Goethe
The city's public celebration of Goethe's birthday, on 28 August.
The next edition has not been announced yet
Weimar was keeping Goethe's birthday as a public festival while he was still alive to attend it, and the town has never stopped.
On 28 August residents, visitors and the usual public figures raise a glass in his honour. Very few writers have a home town that has marked their birthday continuously since their own lifetime, and the unbroken line is more interesting than any single year's programme — this is a habit, not an anniversary.
The Weinfest on the Frauenplan is laid out around the same date, directly in front of his house, so the birthday and the wine village are effectively one occasion. If you are in Weimar at the end of August you will not have to look for either of them.
