Galli Theater

An intimate stage inside the Shakespeares: fairy tales for children at four, the same fairy tales turned on the grown-ups at eight.

Windischenstraße 2-4, 99423 Weimar

About Galli Theater

A small stage inside the Shakespeares, running on two clocks: at four in the afternoon the fairy tales are for children, at eight the same stories are turned on the grown-ups. Galli has worked in the Windischenstraße since 2005 and calls itself the theatre for big and small, which the timetable takes literally rather than sentimentally.

Four o'clock and eight o'clock

The afternoons belong to Rotkäppchen, Rumpelstilzchen, Dornröschen and the Bremen town musicians. The evenings take the same shelf of material somewhere else entirely: a Froschkönig für Erwachsene billed as a lustful relationship fairy tale, the marriage comedies Ehekracher and Ehejubel, a show about seven types of people, an evening with Eugen Roth.

The Weimar house of a German network

Galli is not a local invention: this is the Weimar house of a company with stages across Germany, working to that network's own method. What it means here is practical — a small room playing most nights of the week, with a bill that changes almost daily and a repertoire deep enough to allow it.

Not to be measured against the big houses

The city's own listing puts the house's case better than a review could: it does not want to be compared with the large theatres but "mit dem Herzen erkannt" — recognised with the heart — and it takes on genuinely serious subjects in a mostly humorous way. Read that as the honest warning it is: this is not the National Theatre, and it is not trying to be.
