Weimarer Kabarett Open Air
Next date to be announced
June to late August, every summer
The city's cabaret stage moves outdoors for the summer.
Satire, sharp music and evenings that fit no other bill, in the granary loft of one of Weimar's oldest houses.
A cabaret company working out of a granary loft above one of the oldest houses in Weimar, and selling itself with no modesty whatsoever: "the wittiest address in Weimar", the Goethe city's "basic supply of humour". Four performers, satire with a piano behind it, and a bill built around the two names this town cannot get away from.
The house in the Jakobstraße is among the oldest in Weimar and has, by its own account, always drawn artists, musicians and scholars — Franz Liszt, Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Hans Christian Andersen are the guests it names. The cabaret sits in the granary loft at the top of it, which is a small room and part of the effect: the audience is inside the joke rather than watching it.
Liebermann started the company after five years at the Leipzig cabaret, and plays it with an ensemble of four — a writer and performer, a guitarist and pianist, a pianist and singer who leads the ensemble, and a pianist who conducts and composes. That mix is why the evenings are as musical as they are verbal.
Between its own premieres in the loft the company tours constantly, across Thuringia and Saxony and well beyond — restaurants, hotel halls, small theatres, forty-odd dates in an autumn. That is how a town of this size keeps a cabaret of its own: the loft alone would not pay for it.
